About Acorn Eyewash Stations
Nov 1st 2024
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) prescribes regulations for the location, installation, and operation of emergency wash stations, including eyewash stations and emergency drench showers (among others) at work sites in which caustic chemicals are used, generally considered as those with a pH of either less than 2 or greater than 11.5.
Among the premier manufacturers of emergency wash stations in the commercial and industrial plumbing industries is Acorn Engineering, which has enjoyed a long and illustrious history. This article will serve as a quick jumping-off point for Acorn eyewash stations.
Types of Acorn Eyewash Stations
There are two main types of emergency eyewash stations, which are represented by additional categories within Acorn Engineering’s official product catalog. These are plumbed and portable emergency eyewash stations.
Acorn produces portable eyewash stations such as the S0P50 that includes an 18 gallon polyethylene tank and which is gravity fed. It has no moving parts and can be either wall-mounted or positioned on any suitable flat surface. These portable Acorn eyewash stations provide a minimum flow of .4 GPM for at least 15 minutes and are ideal for use in remote locations or elsewhere that a permanently plumbed fixture is impractical or impossible.
In addition to this portable solution, Acorn Engineering produces a wide range of plumbed emergency eyewash stations, which are further divisible into additional subcategories.
Among the most recognizable of these are the company’s bright yellow, pedestal-mounted eyewash stations.
Even among Acorn eyewash stations, these pedestal-mounted, plumbed eyewash stations offer excellent value and unflinching utility. They are characterized by highly durable, corrosion-resistant stainless steel bowls (or, as an alternative, high-quality ABS bowls) as well as stainless steel or ABS push-handles with integral strainers. Where ABS is used, antimicrobial additives are added to the plastic to inhibit harmful microbial growth.
In some cases, these Acorn eyewash stations can be equipped with stainless steel foot pedals, providing a reliable, durable, hands-free alternative to operation.
The spray heads are protected by pressure-sensitive dust covers that automatically disengage when the valves are opened, and produce a soft, dispersed, effective flow to dislodge contaminants from the eyes. The spray heads are also antimicrobial and feature integral filters to remove debris from the water.
While these are primarily considered pedestal mounted options, the company also produces many popular models, with the above features, that can be mounted to the wall or floor instead. Moreover, these Acorn eyewash stations are easy to maintain, conveniently pre-assembled, and are finished with a highly-visible yellow powder coat. Barrier-free options are also available.
To meet the needs of some specific installation locations, Acorn Engineering also produces some pedestal-mounted eyewash stations that are configurable with clamshell covers that protect the wash station.
For installation in cold locations, Acorn Engineering manufactures some frost-proof and freeze-resistant eyewash stations. For instance, the S0320-FPB eyewash station is manufactured with a frost-proof bury valve, to be buried beneath the frost line, for use in cold locations. Acorn’s S0440-FRV is a freeze-resistant model, intended to be wall-mounted, with a valve to be installed behind a wall in a heated area to prevent freezing.
For installation in locations in which space comes at a premium, Acorn Engineering has also designed and developed eyewash stations that are designed to mount to a wall and which feature a swing-down arm with spray heads. When not in use, the spray head can be conveniently folded back up against the housing inside the wall.
Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Acorn S0000-FME Eyewash Stations
Simplicity of design, and ease of installation and operation of select Acorn eyewash stations is one of the reasons that the company has enjoyed a preeminent position in the industry it serves for so long.
For instance, the Acorn S0000-FME eyewash station is remarkably easy to install and can be installed in locations in which there is already an existing faucet; in fact, it is expressly designed to do so.
To install one of these Acorn eyewash stations, simply remove the existing aerator from the faucet, flush the faucet to remove any debris, and then screw on the diverter valve (with the on/off knob facing towards the front of the fixture). Acorn Engineering produces 5 separate models of adaptors to ensure a wide range of compatibility with existing fixtures.
(Note: to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, delivered water temperature to this faucet-mounted eyewash cannot exceed 100℉).
Acorn eyewash stations like this one feature extremely durable, long-lasting, corrosion-resistant chrome-plated brass construction. Not only is it extremely strong and resistant to chemical attack, but it is low-maintenance and easy to keep clean, simplifying maintenance of these eyewash stations.
